Feedback remains one of the hardest areas of higher education practice to get right. Educators spend significant time producing comments, completing rubrics, moderating grades, and supporting students after assessment. Yet students still experience feedback as unclear, disconnected, overly retrospective, or difficult to use.
The issue is not simply that students need more feedback, faster feedback, or longer feedback. They need feedback they can understand, test, discuss, and act on while learning is still in motion. Making feedback valuable therefore requires a shift: from feedback as a grading task to feedback as an instructional design challenge.
The first papers in this series argued that higher education needs assessment systems that are credible, authentic, inclusive, AI-aware, and operationally sustainable. They also made the case for connected assessment ecosystems, in which tasks, feedback processes, evidence of learning, analytics, and professional judgment work together to support learning over time. This paper builds on that argument by focusing on feedback as the connective tissue of that ecosystem.
Blackboard established the Future of Assessment working group to help institutions navigate the current moment of uncertainty with clarity and confidence. Insights from our roundtable discussions have led us to a more active view of feedback: one in which rubrics, dialogue, formative assessment, peer review, and AI-supported reflection work together to help students build judgment before final submission.
Dialogic rubrics and AI create a practical opportunity for higher education to address feedback challenges that have persisted for decades. The opportunity is not to automate marking. It is to help students engage with standards earlier, rehearse evaluative judgment, and enter feedback conversations with a clearer sense of what quality means and where their work needs to develop. Blackboard is actively exploring capabilities that support this direction.
