I just heard this announcement was coming soon. Is it? Does anyone know?
I have not heard anything about an end to MH, but Blackboard has announced the end of the Flexible Deployment Option for SaaS clients. Everyone on SaaS will be on the Continuous Delivery model.
We renewed our Managed Hosting (based out of the Calgary data centre) on a 3-year term starting this past May only to find out this past fall that they are closing it down and we are being asked to consider migrating to SaaS. We met with the Blackboard president recently who told us that they are closing down data centres in many regions and apologize for not advising their customers sooner.
At BbWorld, the executive leadership team didn't indicate an end of life for MH. I'd like to know more about what the dates are for this as well.
Gail - can you provide any other details about where or how you heard this? There haven't been any announcements about this in BtBb or anywhere else, that I'm aware.
My name is Chris Dixon, and I'm the product manager at Blackboard responsible for our Learn Managed Hosting and SaaS deployments.
We’re excited about our SaaS adoption, which is quickly becoming our most popular deployment method for Learn. Where both Learn SaaS and Learn Managed Hosting are available within a region, we strongly encourage our Learn customers in that region to move to SaaS to take advantage of zero-downtime software updates, higher availability and resilience, access to Blackboard Data, always being on the most adopted Learn version, and many other benefits.
We also continue to evaluate Learn demand in each region and make decisions about closing Managed Hosting data centers once demand has fallen below a sustainable level. When clients are impacted by these data center closures, we communicate with them directly and with as much advance notice as possible.
We committed during the executive briefing at BbWorld ’19 to share information around the longer term roadmap for Self and Managed Hosting deployments of Learn by BbWorld ‘20, and we’re working to keep that commitment.
For information about the supported versions and deployments of Learn today, please see the Learn Help site at https://help.blackboard.com/Learn
Thanks for your reply. Do you plan to have a regular post up around this topic? Would like to know ahead of time to share with my leadership.
Hi Letitia -
When we share a longer term SH/MH roadmap, I do expect there will be posts here on the community site.
Until then, I'd encourage you to discuss your institution's Path to SaaS with your Blackboard account team or join one of our programs centered around helping our clients move to SaaS, like these workshops.
We're locked in through July, 2022. At BbWorld during the exec listening sessions, they said several times that there were no plans to cut dev/support for MH/SH. However, it does make financial sense in the longer term for Blackboard. Was this published somewhere or was it a hallway conversation or hearsay?
