Is there a way to push edits/updates of content from a master/parent course to a child course?
Assuming you are not talking about cross listing (that is the correct term, right?) course copy.
Can you clarify what you mean by master/parent course?
Are you talking about "merged enrollment" courses as Gail mentioned? (those I usually call Parents)
Or do you mean courses that hold the developed content that are copied to sections? (those I usually call Masters)
With Parent/Child courses (aka merged) - students never access the child courses which remain unavailable. So usually there is no content in the children or at least no need to update it.
With Master/Section courses there is no built method for pushing updates from one course into another. Course copies will be additive. However, you can design these courses to use centrally manged files so you can update the files in one location.
Honestly, I thought that the parent/child thing had been phased out and I'd love to know more.
I think the only functionality around this idea is to have documents in the content collection that you link to in your courses. Updates to these in the content collection will push out to the courses.
All of my classes are set up as Parent/Child courses because there are 3 or 4 lab sections that all meet together for lecture. The system administrator sets them up as Parent/Child classes, then ALL students see the info posted in the Parent course and I do ALL grading from the parent course. There is no activity in the Child Courses during the semester.
This makes it much easier to insure that all students get the same announcements, updates, etc., since I just post it once instead of 4 times.
In the parent course there is a column showing the child course that each students is enrolled in. I create Groups for each child course section so I can easily grade assignments for a given lab section, or view all the students in the full grade center for lecture work.
If you teach multiple sections of the same course, ask your system administrator about Parent/Child courses. Our entire department relies on this feature to help maintain consistent instruction in courses with multiple lab sections, or in multiple sections of the same online course.
