Has anyone developed a migration checklist for moving from managed hosting to SAAS? If you have can you please share.
Hi Craig, I don't have a checklist exactly but here are the things my team did to prepare:
Hi Craig -
Here's a link to our migration checklist. It features:
Those two lists were adapted from upgrade lists posted to the BLKBRD listserv over the years.
Like Kristine, I saved everything -- PDF'd every setting possible and created a file structure to match the admin panel. We went with a full database migration so everything did pass over properly, but I wanted to make sure I didn't lose anything important.
There are tabs for role-based activities: Student, Instructor, Admin. We assigned one person per role and everyone contributed to the All Users tab. We recorded any issues or error messages so we could check with our migration project manager or Bb support.
I exported the known issues for SaaS and dropped them into another Google Sheet so the team could search for issues without having to log into Behind the Bb. If we knew something was a known issue or functioning as designed, then we could also make a note of it during testing.
We also have a tab for specific third-party tools we use so we could make sure we tested everything. This was helpful for us because the test migration didn't illuminate all potential issues, whether it was due to the versioning between test and production, or the multi-instance configuration, or some other quirky thing.
Feel free to make a copy of the Google Sheet or download an Excel version to modify it for your institution's Blackboard site and office staffing needs.
Hope this helps.
Hi Craig, if you haven't seen this documentation already, we also have a few resources on the SaaS migration process on help.blackboard.com: https://help.blackboard.com/Learn/Administrator/Hosting/Migration_Planning
Thanks and congrats on the future migration!
