discussion post editing

I am considering allowing my students to edit their discussion posts and I have two concerns.

My first concern is about on time posts.  One element in the grading rubric is that the post is on time.  I am concerned that I will not be able to tell when they made their original post.

My second concern is that there will be a substantial amount of editing based on what other students post so grades will no longer be valid.

From a technical standpoint, is it still possible to see when a post was originally posted after it is edited?

From an evaluation standpoint, do students routinely change posts after reading posts from other students when they have permission to edit?

Any general advice about allowing students to edit posts?
