Can I create an assignment in Blackboard that is graded based on letter grades only? I don't want any points or grading schema. I just want to type in the letter grade for the assignment (not a manual column).
You can't get away from points being associated with an assignment BUT you can 1) make a grading schema where students see only a letter and 2) you can NOT include the column in the grade center calculations so *it will seem* like it is not for points from the students' perspective.
You have to give how many points the assignment is worth when you create it but make the primary display as letter.
You can then just type the letter grade for the assignment when grading.
If you don't want it calculated into the average, set that to not include. If you do want it calculated, take a look at your grading schema. There's an option for Grades Manually Entered As (Letter) = Will Calculate as (%). You can change the percentages.
It depends on what you are looking for.
Take a look at this:
Improving letter grading
It's not a solution, it's just an overview on what could be achieved. Because we are using letter grades for the majority of our courses/assignments, we have encouraged the teachers to use the least amount of points possible, making it so that:
0 points = Fail
1 point = Pass
2 points = Pass with distinction
The assignment would in this case get a maximum of 2 points. As an instructor, you would either use "Text" in the "display grades as" are, manually converting the points to grades by changing the cells in the grade center, or create a grading schema with:
0-49% = Fail
50-99% = Pass
99-100% = Pass with distinction
There is unfortunately no other way around it, I am afraid.
