Question From Blackboard Designer: Default Setting for Revealing Assessment Answers

I’m a designer for Blackboard and would like to get feedback from this community on some design-related questions. Answering these questions is highly beneficial for our process. Please feel free to explain your answer, as your explanation can be just as helpful to us as the answer itself.

Question:  Blackboard Learn Ultra allows instructors to include automatically graded questions (such as multiple choice and fill-in-the-blank questions) for both assignments and tests.  We’re considering establishing default settings for how the correct answers to the questions are revealed to students, based on the type of assessment you create.

For assessments such as assignments, where the goal is for students to learn (formative assessments), by default correct answers would be revealed after a student has submitted their assignment.

For assessments such as tests, where the goal is to evaluate students (summative assessments), by default correct answers would be revealed to students after the due date. This would keep students from sharing correct answers with one another prior to the due date.

Instructors would always be able to change when they reveal answers to students for any test or assignment by changing the default setting.

Please let us know if these default settings represents how you think about and create tests and assignments. If not and we were to default all assessments to one style of answer reveal, what should that default be?

Thanks,
