Is there a "trick" to formatting emails? Seems unless emails are created right in Blackboard, the formatting often is not correct. For example, recipients receive emails with either too much or no space between paragraphs. Suggestions?
I'm assuming you are writing the emails in Word and them copy and pasting them into Blackboard? From a technical perspective when you do this Blackboard is trying to convert word's formatting rules into HTML format and they are not always compatible or may look different. There are a few ways to get around this issue:
The main thing to be aware of is that Blackboard uses HTML to format text, so the best way to ensure formatting is correct is to format it within the Blackboard editor, or find a HTML editor that you like (e.g. Dreamweaver) and use that for editing.
The other trick regarding paragraph spacing is that a hard return (hitting enter) in Blackboard creates a new paragraph with a line spacing gap, whereas a soft return (Shift+Enter) shifts the text to a new line, without a line space.
Any update to this issue? It's been over a year-and-a-half now since I raised the issue. Christian King's suggestions might work but don't seem to really address the need to create docs in Word and then put them in Blackboard (content, emails...) w/o having to entirely reformat them.
John I'm not sure this is an issue that Blackboard can fix as such. Any HTML website where you paste text directly copied from Word has this issue (e.g. Wix). The problem is that the standard used for Word documents differs from the standard of HTML. Blackboard does attempt to transfer the text to HTML format, but there will always be some issues with spacing and formatting. If Blackboard stripped the Word formatting completely you wouldn't be able to copy bold text, copy headings, copy fonts or tables etc. Microsoft are more to blame for this issue as it is their formatting code that has caused this problem. Web developers have complained about it for years.
You could use a Word to HTML converter such as https://html-cleaner.com/ This will keep the formatting intact and doesn't take long. There's also some other suggestions here: 5 Ways to Strip the Formatting When You Copy & Paste Text
You could also just compose the emails in Blackboard and use the formatting tools available, which are guaranteed to work.
