New numbering system for Learn 9

So the version number for Learn 9.1 Q4 2015 is 9.1.201510.1171702 (or thereabouts).

The version number for Learn 9.1 Q2 2016 is 3000.0.0-ci.4+813b16a (or thereabouts).

The version number for Learn 9.1 Q2 2016 CU1 is 3000.1.1-rel.7+a3f61d9 (or thereabouts).

Before 2016 the version number did not change when CUs were applied; now the second element seems to be incremented to indicate the CU.

So my question is, can anyone shed further light on the rules which are being applied to the version numbers for future releases?  For example, should we expect Learn 9.1 Q2 2016 CU2 to have a version number starting 3000.2.?  Should we expect Learn 9.1 Q4 2016 to have a version number starting 3001.0.?  That is, does "3000" represent "9.1.201606" in the old money, so that "9.1.201612" will be represented by "3001"?  Or is there something else driving these values?

Thanks.
