Hello all.

I'd like to ask around what chat tool do you use in your Learn courses. I am trying to get a list of different options so someone else can choose which one fits the most in their situation, so getting an idea of what is people using out there would be helpful.

Obviously, the Chat in the Collaboration tool within courses and Bb Collaborate, as well as Bb IM are already on the list... is there any other you would recommend? Not necessarily free, though that would be a plus.

Hi Esther, just want to share an info which can be useful for your choice : I've been told recently by a solutions engineer from Blackboard that the default "chat" tool from Blackboard will be removed in the Q2 2016 update, and that support will stop handling tickets for it from June 2016 ...
We don't use much chat on our side, we have Blackboard Collaborate integrated in Learn, which is great for synchronous chat/visio but is not free, and also the chat is not persistent : once you leave the room, if you reenter you don't see the chat anymore.
We like to use chat/comments in Google docs too, since in our school all students have a google apps account.
I'll subscribe to this post as I'm curious to know which solution you go for in the end

  We know about the chat tool, and that is one reason they are looking for a replacement. The tool will be gone, and Collaborate is much more than a chat to be accessed from the course...

Hi Ester,
Between staff we use Cisco Jabber and I only wish this was also available for students. We currently recommend IM to the students. I don't know what we will replace that with. It is a question that comes up from Lecturers sometimes. I wondering about titanpad.com. This could be linked into Bb Learn but I can't see any embed option there.

Hello All,

I am interested in this conversation as well... we would like to provide more opportunity for students/faculty to connect real time using chat tools. Our department has been loving using Slack for communication and we think our online students could benefit from something of that nature. Slack allows users to share files, images, links and breakout into smaller groups - it is a very active and engaging environment.

We've experimented with the default chat tools in Bb and have found them to be lacking... most of the time students can't get it to even launch as they are Java based. This is complicated by the fact that we have been pushing Collaborate Ultra (which our users seem to be taking to) which works best using Google Chrome. So I am not surprised to hear that this feature may be going away.

Has anyone leveraged the Social Cloud tools for realtime chat? Any other tools that are working for folks out there?

  Thanks all for your input. In the end, they have decided to let it be and use Collaborate Ultra for their chat sessions. I will pass the suggestions given here.
  
  One problem I see is that Ultra will not save the chat messages, and that is something that might be interesting for some teachers.
