Email in merged courses

I have an instructor that says that whenever he uses the “Send Email” option, he gets two copies of the email, one for the parent section and the other for the child section.

However, since yesterday, he's been receiving only one copy of the email, that for the parent section. When he checked with the students of the child section, some of them said they didn’t receive it.

I don't know of anything that changed yesterday, but I'm not sure where to start looking. Any advice?
