I made a blog post that gives a basic look at what permissions each role has. The post only shows course roles, not system roles.
Blackboard also has an article about this on their help site.
You can get a list of what each role can do, as configured on your own installation, by going through:
System Admin -> Course / Organisation Roles -> choose "privileges" from the menu you see by each role to see what users who have that role on a course can do.
Hi Mathew- Thank you for the pathway however I am not a system admin but I would say I probably should be considering I am a Blackboard Fellow at our institution.
Here's my rundown on Course/Organization Roles:
Guest - no customization possible, ignore
Student/Participant - no customization possible
Instructor/Leader - can customize, but I always want separate privileges for Instructors vs. Leaders, so I copy Instructor/Leader and set various privileges on each
All the rest boil down to two types: those who can access course grades (Grader, T.A./Assistant) and those who cannot (Course Builder). All of these can have custom privileges, and I make at least some changes to each. (For example, any role that will ever be assigned to a course I remove the ability to remove users.) Sadly there isn't any "Export Role" function, so any customizing you do to roles on your test system will have to be manually replicated onto production.
When I create custom roles I typically start with a copy of either Instructor or Course Builder (depending on if grade access should be granted) then modify the privileges as desired. There are often less than intuitive quirks to what capabilities are granted or restricted when customizing roles, so... test, test, test before granting new roles to anybody. Giving Bulk Delete options to a role might be appropriate, but don't grant that accidentally. You know, or so I've heard...
Description of Roles and privileges associated with those roles.
I'm one of our college's Bb System Admins and I wanted to know what the roles were and what the default privileges were fro those roles. I searched Bb Help and found a list of those roles setup in an Excel Spreadsheet. I just searched Bb Help in it's new format and could not find that list. Luckily, I saved that spreadsheet. Since I cannot post an attachment, here's a link to the Excel Spreadsheet that gives all teh default roles and the assigned privileges for those roles. The spreadsheet also includes a description of the privilege.
