Professors would like to be able to message all students in their courses using the internal system without having to be added as contacts to the students' accounts.
Does anyone know if the "Add a contact" feature is something that can be switched off?? I'm having the opposite issue to the above, where students are trying to message me, but I have to accept their request before they can send a message.
I can see there is a "Allow site-wide messaging" tick box:
"If enabled, users can view the list of all users on the site when selecting someone to message, and their message preferences include the option to accept messages from anyone on the site. If disabled, users can only view the list of users in their courses, and they have just two options in message preferences - to accept messages from their contacts only, or their contacts and anyone in their courses."
The description doesn't specify regarding adding contacts.
I am wondering if experimenting with role permissions might be the way to go. I am noticing a couple role permissions that are focused around messaging any user.
Try creating a duplicate of your student role and mess with these settings and new user with that role to see if you can get it working.
Thank you for the suggestion, Mike. What version of Moodle are you on? I cannot see the "Bypass user preferences for messaging any user" item in my system.
Hmmm. I am on Moodle 3.6 with Blackboard Open. (Isn't everyone?)
Do you not see it?
Ahhhh I see what happened. I usually just do a search within the web page, I've never used the filter function so your screen shot looked different to my page. Thank you! I will experiment with these settings and report my findings
Okay, so I have done some testing and this is what I have found.
1. My initial response to Susanna is moot, I had a student try to add me as a contact and assumed it was because she couldn't message me, but that was user error.
2. The "bypass user preferences for messaging any user" permission doesn't override a user's preference to not be contacted by a non-contact. Even as a system administrator I must add a user who has this setting switched on. Susanna's initial request for this to be an option sounds good to me!
Susanna Southard that role permission for bypassing user privacy preferences for messaging any user might be the golden ticket for your teachers as well.
