Our faculty would like to easily see the word count when grading discussion boards, blogs, assignments, and journals.
Hi, Jackie Hughes this has been a topic of conversation recently as we continue working on things like graded discussions and analytics, particularly in Ultra courses. Could you share some additional detail about how exactly this factors in to instructors reviewing student-created content, please? Would it be more useful or a better reflection of student work to look at things like the number of original posts a student creates, number of posts they reply to, number of replies their posts generate, and other measures like that that attempt to gauge engagement or "quality" over quantity?
Hi Brad and Jackie
We would be really interested in a word count tool when assignments are submitted. I understand that this is available in Safe Assign, but are there any plans to make it part of the standard assignment submission process ? So for example where students see the date and time stamp of their submission they also see the Word count. Ideally this would also be possible on a preview screen so that they could check it prior to finalising their submission.
We're in the same boat. About 90% of our online courses require a minimum word count as part of the grading rubric, so some faculty ask students to post the word count at the end of their thread and/or replies (hoping for honesty). Most have to block every single thread and reply, copy it into Word, get the word count, delete it, go back to BB. . . it's an unbelievable amount of wasted manhours when one considers we have virtually thousands of faculty grading thousands of DB modules every week. I've been pushing for over a year for BB to design it so when a student submits their thread or reply, the word count appears somewhere for the faculty to glance at total word count. Might not hurt for students to see it as well while they write. Glad you guys are working on this. It is super important to us!
We really don't need all the other stuff you mention, Brad. Besides, some of that is available in the Performance Dashboard. What we need is a straight up function that counts words posted per post. Thanks.
We dont use safe assign however an option to show word count or set a min\max woulld be mega useful.
I've had a few faculty ask for an optional "auto-grade" feature that gives participation points when the word count is reached. Just putting it out there
