Thank you to everyone who was able to attend and participate in the 2019 K-BUG Spring Conference! It is always great to connect with colleagues in person to share tools and expertise. Here are some highlights of the day!

  • Amanda Reed shared an Introduction to Blackboard's Digital Teaching and Learning Series (eTeacher) at our "March" K-BUG Meeting. Check out the Meeting Minutes and the Recording for more details.
  • The Lightning Round Presentations:
    • 10 Things You Didn't Know About Blackboard by Patsy Hayes from Blackboard See
      • 10 - Access Learn via a mobile browser - Bb Mobile App, good for discussions, collaborate app
      • 9 - Cloud Storage Integration (google drive, onedrive, dropbox, box)
      • 8 - Collaborate is on for groups in the LMS  (permanent session for Office hours, just share link to all classes)
      • 7 - Drag and Drop material into your course (folders and items) drag items up and down
      • 6 - Submission receipts - students get a confirmation number for all submission in a receipt, also in the reports menu
      • 5 - Retention Center - fast view to find at-risk students (can create your own rules for this)
      • 4 -  Attendance Tracking (Collaborate) - good for tracking on-ground attendance in the classroom
      • 3 - Align Goals to Content - Assignment, content, activities. ID directly to course goals
      • 2 - Date Management - automatically adjust due dates to new course start dates (April says this is problematic).
      • 1 - Can integrate audio and video directly into courses

      • HP Reveal app (formerly Aurasma)
      • You can take a picture, add an overlay (3D model), etc.
      • Add pictures into Bb content and tag them as an HP Reveal item for students to view
      • QR tags work too
    • Remind by Denise Klassen
      • Sends texts without using personal cell phone numbers
      • Instructors can add an embed code in Blackboard to make it easy for students to join the class message group.
      • This provides a record that can be reviewed (if administrators, etc. have instructor's login credentials)
    • Institutional Content Collection (in Bb) by Denise Klassen
      • Can overwrite files so that every instance/link gets changed at once
      • Versioning is available
    • Paciello Group Colour Contrast Analyzer by Krystal Iseminger
      • Free tool that can be installed on any computer (even without install permissions)
      • Shows examples of what someone with color blindness would see
      • Says whether the contrast passes WCAG 2.1 standards
      • Excellent for showing faculty issues in their courses/content
    • Ultra Course View: What am I Missing? by Jorge Salinas from Blackboard
    • H5P by April Robbs
      • Content creation tool that includes interactive videos and quizzes
      • Cheaper than SoftChalk

The Oklahoma Learning Innovations Summit is a “blended” professional learning opportunity for educators in the State of Oklahoma.  The summit activities will take place April 1 – 12, 2019 and will focus on advancing excellence in online and blended learning, with particular emphasis on higher education settings. This opportunity is facilitated through the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, Council for Online Learning Excellence.


The Summit includes a wonderful schedule of professional learning opportunities focusing on trends, issues, and techniques for online and blended learning. It is offered in both live online webinar sessions and on-demand lessons and resources covering topics relevant for leaders and educators in Oklahoma.


The Summit is offered free of charge to participants.

I will discuss how Ottawa University uses a Master Course Model for Online courses using Blackboard and Sharepoint. I will address several pros and cons of this type of development.

    • OneNote HandoutMicrosoft OneNote is now a tool available within Blackboard. Learn how to use OneNote to your advantage by using Class Notebooks that work in partnership with Blackboard.
    • This session will go over the basic uses of Microsoft OneNote and the added features available for students and instructors within this new feature. Some of the topics covered will be note taking, collaboration, read only libraries, sharing, and web tagging to enhance online research.
