Bond Uni Update

Posted by lhives May 17, 2017
  • Upgraded from OCT14 CU6 to Q4 2016
    • Issues uploading files from IE
    • Issues searching for users when browsing a user list
    • A few problems with our custom brand but nothing major
    • Annoyances with the static submit button and people not realising the page is longer than what's visible
    • A lot of our privileges reset which wasn't picked up for a day or so... for a short time we had people creating users and subjects.
    • Had/Having some issues with weekly server restarts and sessions not timing out.
  • Changed our external course key format to a new 'Offering Key' which will now be shared by multiple systems to improve integration between systems. [subjectcode]_YYYY_SEM_MODE_[groupnum] eg. CORE11-101_2017_MAY_ONL_00. It is also some prep for the future where there may be many groups in different modes in a single semester.
  • Have a new Subject Outline building block drawing all its information from our new Curriculum Management system. Displays the outline for the subject the student is enrolled in where there is a merge.
  • Had a little B2 created to remove or add a tool on the subject menu (Course Menu) of sites in bulk. We used this to remove the old subject outline tool link and add the new one. When you add the new one you can even specify where in the list you want it (eg. 2nd item in the menu)
  • New version of our subject wizard installed
    • We are working on an even newer version that will create assignments and grade centre columns based on information in the subject outline (Curriculum management system)
  • Still having some trouble with SafeAssign with the reports being slow to generate.
  • Curriculum Management System (if anyone interested)
    • First batch of subject outlines successfully approved and published (to web and iLearn) from the new system
    • working to integrate with a new exams management software to feed the info from a subject outline straight to that system
    • working to feed information to Timetabling for scheduling of lecture recording (opt-out information)and access to facilities and IT for that workload type
    • Next steps are to start working on assessment into Blackboard and working with Blackboard on Learning Outcomes management through Goals.
  • Working with the Faculty of Law on utilising the new goal performance feature to integrate their legal skills across their entire curriculum and allow for reporting and self-monitoring for the students.

Curtin Update

Posted by gcunningham May 9, 2017
  1. We have reverted to Turnitin Basic from Direct at the end of 2016 and have started change management activities with the availability of Feedback Studio
  2. Completed a Proof of Concept with Blackboard Consulting to change integration methods from Snapshot to REST APIs
  3. Curtin is deprecating its Middleware to create a shift from a Recycle to Roll Over Unit Life Cycle and expanding native Bb Admin tools such as Inst Hierarchy
  4. Moving to Q4 2016 from Q2 2016 in July 2017 - mainly for taking advantage of the Full REST Apis
  5. We are actively attempting to control MH Storage - Course Deletions are only having a marginal effect
  6. Curtin is preparing to move from Echo360 to ALP during some time in 2017.
  7. Blackboard Analytics is continuing to develop with a target to roll out customise integrated reports in Semester 2, 2017
  8. We are considering the implementation of Bb Collaborate Ultra in Semester 2, 2017

UQ Update Jan 19th - 2017

Posted by scolly Jan 18, 2017

Key UQ eLearning Activities for 2017

  • The Blackboard Upgrade will occur in July 2017 – to Q4-2016 release
  • Echo may be moved to the cloud in November 2017 if we can negotiate a reasonable price.
  • Significant progress will be made preparing to move UQ Bb to SaaS ready for end of 2018.
  • Will finally have Best Practice for Online Course Design guidelines along with a new course template.. and expect resources to deploy this widely.
  • Expect developments on the Student Experience Strategy. The PVC may approve resources to build key elements of the strategy into all courses.
  • The eLearning team will search for and support a supplementary discussion board (as per T&L request).
  • The eLearning team will move from ITS  to Library.
  • Expect expansion of the of the e-exams pilot, and a project to shortlist and select an official central exam system.
  • Expect progress towards a BYOD policy for student smart devices (driven by ITaLI).
  • Decommission 2 of 3 legacy ePortfolio systems – and expanded use of Chalk and Wire.
  • Deployment of iThenticate.
  • Training and communication focus areas next year: Active learning tools; pre-class learning content generation; Online marking; Peer assessment for group work.
  • Expect more of the University’s elearning technology needs will be achieved through Learning Tool Interoperability (LTI) integrations.
  • Expect movement towards more sustainable content creation which will involve economies of scale derived from open access material or publisher collaborations.

Anecdote: Student Video Assignments: The figure below shows student video assignment growth from 1 Terabyte to 9 Terabytes over 3 years (2014-2016), to the point that they are a popular accepted and effective form of assessment of communication skills and understanding of material. Kaltura student video assignments achieved 284,517 views during 2016.

Video assessments are an important fit for UQ because:

  • UQ has a focus on identify verified assessment. In this case you can see and hear the student. S
  • It’s a far more efficient way to assess communication skills or clinical skills than class presentations or OSCE’s. It does not take up tute time, and it can be assessed anywhere the coordinator has internet.
  • It fits the UQ student strategy with the focus on group work and in-class active learning
  • It’s a powerful formative tool (students practice and fine tune their scripts over and over), but also an excellent summative tool for assessment.
  • Instructional videos produced by coordinators provide analytics to show which students have viewed the video and when

Anecdote: The eLearning Solutions Service helped 135 Course Coordinators across the University transform the eLearning experience for 27,214 students. The eLearning team presented to 23 full school meetings attended by 713 staff. Through these presentations and through promotion of the video case studies online marking increased from 176K/ year to more than 200,000/ year (figure below).

UTS Institutional Update

Posted by cf21492 Oct 17, 2016
  • Currently on 9.1 Q4 2015 CU2; just entering UAT this week for an upgrade in mid November to Q2 2016 CU3, big selling point is the responsive design but it has taken a lot of work to apply our institutional branding to it.
  • Building a business case to change our administration and integrations to support new subject sites each semester (currently recycling and reusing existing sites) and have had Bb Consulting on site recently to assist.
  • Will be talking to Bb Product development next week about the Bb ePortfolio roadmap, and happy to hear from any other uni's with enhancement wishlists we can add to our own.
