Spontaneous Learning - Cultivating a Habit of Learning to Learn

Engaging students in a traditional lecture is difficult. Research indicates that the average attention span for young adults tends to be 20 minutes. With increasing adaption of technology amongst technology-savvy students, a lot of active learning platforms arise to stimulate and support learning that is unlikely to occur, especially when mobile devices are by default as the primary learning tools.
Over the past years, our exploratory work on implementing the flipped classroom pedagogy showed better student engagement in large classes with well-designed interactive learning activities. Following the success of the exploratory work, we have redesigned a telecommunications course and a database course with flipped classroom and other blended learning approaches to improve student engagement and to facilitate collaborative learning in the virtual learning space.
