Discussion forums in learning management systems have been a default tool for any course that plans to do asynchronous activities. At the same time, many online instructors are disappointed that discussion forums are limited as an alternative to in-classroom discussions. This sparked alternative ways to utilize the discussion forum in graduate and undergraduate level courses. This session explores out-of-the-box thinking on how to use discussion forums and with examples through an activity called "4-Square Discussion Forum Activity". The activity came about when two students were asked to lead a discussion forum and were unsatisfied with the typical "one post, two comments" approach. Hear the clever ways in which students engaged in a discussion and how gamification came into play.
