Predictive analytics has become a buzzword in higher education. But the hype surrounding ‘big data’ tends to obscure the people, processes, and high impact practices that put analytics to use in support of student success.
In Fall 2017, a few California State University (CSU) campuses will launch pilots of Blackboard Predict and X-Ray Learning Analytics to forecast student success and struggles in designated high failure rate courses. The CSU System has embarked upon a targeted graduation initiative. This cutting-edge way of leveraging data with timely interventions offers a potentially powerful mechanism of students identification at the point and time of failure, before it is too late, and offering them strategies for course correction.
In this session, following a brief overview of the CSU Graduation Initiative 2025 and its graduation rates and achievement gap expectations, campus academic technology professionals will discuss their reasons for investing in predictive analytics, share their reflections during the planning stage, their experience during implementation, and the specific programs they have put in place empowering predictive analytics into action.
