Almost forty percent of college students will transfer institutions at least once (Shapiro et al., 2015). Despite this, transfer students face many barriers to success: cost of attendance, statewide policies, campus climate, and post-transfer adjustment (Hatton, Homer, & Park, 2009). Additionally, most institutions do not have dedicated transfer specialists to help facilitate the process (Strempel, 2013).
In an effort to start mitigating the barriers faced by transfer students at our institution, an advising center was formed to focus specifically on transfer students. As part of this effort, a Transfer Guide course was created in Blackboard. This session will review the decision process that identified Blackboard as the optimal tool for the Transfer Guide. It will also cover how we created an easily accessible and engaging Blackboard course for incoming transfer students and how we utilized Blackboard functionality (auto-enrollment, adaptive release, statistics tracking) to optimize the student experience.
